Top 5 Things Students Get Wrong While Picking a Course

Choosing a course for your overseas education is the biggest decision you will make in your study abroad journey. It’s a thrilling prospect but it can be quite confusing at the same time. When your computer screen flashes hundreds of degree and university names, pop ups for future job opportunities and numerous articles offering the right advice, it often ends up putting students in a tricky situation.
This is followed by endless advice and tips from family members, TikTok reels, Instagram ads and from elder cousins. While all of these aspects have their place, the very first step is to acknowledge the most common mistakes students make while choosing to study overseas. This blog focuses on the common mistakes in course selection and how student career guidance and thoughtful planning can go a long way in choosing the right degree.

1. Following the Crowd and Not Yourself

One of the most common mistakes in course selection is selecting a degree because it is popular. Your best friend wants to pursue software engineering or your cousin has gotten into a good law school. You feel that these are tried and tested pathways and you’re not wrong. But the truth of the matter is that your own strengths and weaknesses and your own and no one can understand them better than you.

A lack of proper student career guidance leads to students choosing courses that neither match their passion nor their skills. If you love design and are good at it, committing yourself to a career in mechanical engineering is akin to trying to pass a circle through a square, or asking a fish to climb a tree.

Therefore, the smartest choice when it comes to choosing the right path, is to introspect and pick subjects that excite you. This excitement will directly translate into positive performance and you’ll be close to a fruitful and meaningful career instead of a career path that is monotonous and dictated by popular choices.

You’re a unique individual entitled to choosing your own path and defining success in your own way.

2. Turning a Blind Eye to Future Industry Trends

We live in dynamic times where there are no guarantees and industry dynamics change on a daily basis. Numerous students pick courses that are popular at the moment but seldom have a clue about where they are headed in the future. This is one of the most common mistakes in course selection as just because an industry is booming today doesn’t guarantee it will stay the same tomorrow.
For example, fields like data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, renewable energy and sustainability are rapidly growing and hold tremendous promise. Alternatively, a few traditionally viable industries have a strong chance of shrinking in the coming decade such as print media and publishing, conventional retail, BPOs or fossil fuels.

So, while choosing the right degree, keep one eye on the future of jobs and the other on the demands of modern employers. Read how industries will change in the next 10 years and adapt accordingly. In my experience, ignoring these trends is one of the common study abroad mistakes that international students make. They put so much time and money into courses with none to little future scope.

3. Ignoring Your Style of Learning

Learning is a very personal process and every course is taught in a very different way. Some programs such as mathematics of software, are deeply theoretical, some such as biotechnology, require lots of lab-work and others such as public relations, require on-ground project based effort. A hugely common mistake in course selection is when students ignore their own learning style.

If you enjoy working in groups or field work, then theory will surely frustrate you. Similarly, if you thrive in a classroom environment and enjoy research, then practical projects may not work for you. That’s where student career guidance comes into play and gives you an informed opinion about your learning preferences and style.

The most important takeaway should be learning about not what you study,  but also how you study it. Once you realise that, things become much simpler.

4. Ignoring Holistic Skill Building

An integral part of our student career guidance and choosing the right degree revolves around essential skill-building. The employability skills landscape is changing rapidly and students need to keep pace with it. Success in the future would not come from holding on to traditional skills. The logic is simple: employers want to put their money into individuals who come with holistic capabilities.

So, the question you should be asking is, does your choice of course offer enough room for holistic development? I feel this is a mistake a lot of students tend to make while choosing their course to study abroad or in general.

Speaking of how to avoid making this mistake, the key is to have access to credible information. You need to know what a course offers in terms of skill enhancement, exposure and experiential learning in addition to its academic value.

There are courses that come with co-op opportunities, scope for professional exposure and practical learning. Contrary to traditional courses relying mainly on theory, these courses can give you a better purchase in terms of future success. For instance, going for a traditional computer science engineering course may not make sense any longer. However, a CSE degree with a specialization in AI and future technologies may be a wise choice.

The bottom line is, do not ignore the need for holistic development and keep future scope in mind while choosing a course. In this direction, credible career counselling will surely be a great investment of your trust and time.

5. Shying Away from Questions

Confucius’ famous quote states; “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life”. Students must inculcate this more. Many students simply accept what they hear whether from peers, advertisements, or even parents without asking deeper questions. This silence leads to more common mistakes in course selection and is a mistake that can be easily avoided with the right guidance.
You must be proactive in your questions and the best way is to prepare and research. How many credits does my course have and does it have a major or a minor? Who are the faculty? Which modules will I study? Is there a clinical placement or an internship component? If yes, then how many hours? Does the university have a functioning alumni? How close is the campus to the city center? Without these answers, you may choose blindly.
This is where student career guidance really becomes effective and speaking to people who have actually undertaken studying abroad gives you invaluable insight.
