Let’s understand what the updated IRCC Guidelines are.

Comprehending IRCC Guidelines

As of November 1, 2024, IRCC updated the eligibility requirements for a PGWP. If your PGWP application was submitted before November 1, 2024, or if you have graduated from a flight school with a secure job offer, you’re exempted from the new requirements.
Now let’s understand, as an international student, what criteria make you eligible to obtain a PGWP in Canada as of 2025

Criteria for PGWP, 2025

There are a few general criteria that you, as an international student, must fulfil.
1. Your study program should be offered by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, as it’s a prerequisite. Please check the listing of your preferred institution, as not all institutions are listed under DLI. Remember, not choosing the right course is one of the common study abroad mistakes people make.
2. Please note that not all programs offered by DLIs are eligible for a PGWP; therefore, please confirm with the institution about your desired study program.
3. The length of your program is very significant to make you eligible for a post-study work permit. Its duration should be a minimum of 8 months; anything less does not qualify.
4. You should maintain a full-time enrollment for the duration of your study program.

Another significant factor is your field of study. Keep reading to know more.

1. All University Programs that are Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral Degrees will not face any restrictions regarding the field of study.

2. For non-university programs, graduation in an eligible field of study that comes under long-term occupation shortage in Canada (e.g., healthcare, education, STEM) is the most important factor for obtaining a PGWP, as per the updated guidelines by IRCC as of November 1, 2024.

So, what are the fields of study as per the updated IRCC guidelines starting from November 1, 2024, that are eligible for a post-study work permit? This list will help you make more informed choices and bring you another step closer to the future you are envisioning for yourself. You must be wondering about the right time to apply for a PGWP. Let me simplify the application process for you.

Applying for PGWP In Canada

After completing your study program and receiving your transcripts and completion certificate from your designated university or college, you have 180 days to apply for your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after completing your study program, which also includes receipt of your final transcript and program completion certificate.

Make sure you keep track of the important dates, as missing this chance would nullify all your previous efforts to gain insightful work experience in Canada.

1. Ensure that all your important documents are in place and organized systematically. You will require

Official university/college transcripts and a study program completion certificate that verifies your proof of graduation.

A valid passport, ensure that you have checked the expiration date

Language proficiency test results, such as IELTS or any other equivalent test

2. Filling out a PGWP application form is your next step. Make sure you fill in all the details carefully and avoid any errors. You have to submit the application form online and make the application through the IRCC website; an application fee of about CAD 255 will be applicable. You have to upload all the authenticated documents on the website.

The post-study work permit application takes about 80 to 180 days to process. You have to make sure you have sufficient funds to sustain yourself till you receive the application number, as you will not be eligible to work during the interim period.

Once you receive the application number for PGWP, you can begin to work, but you are not allowed to travel out of the country until you receive the approved work permit. If you travel without a valid work permit, you will face difficulties and might not be allowed back into Canada.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a golden opportunity for you as an international student to gain significant Canadian work experience, achieve your career goals, and transition to permanent residency. Suppose your plan is to study in Canada. In that case, you have to keep yourself informed about the latest updates in 2025, understand the eligibility criteria, the application process, and make informed choices from the very beginning.
